GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Green Bay and Appleton School Districts will be moving fall sports to the spring after the WIAA cleared school to make that move Friday.
Green Bay Area Schools Superintendent Stephen Murley says that all fall sports offered by the district will be available in the spring, although he says it’s going to take some getting used to.
“We’re used to crisp fall days, falling leaves, and dry air,” Murley said Saturday. “Maybe playing in the Spring it will be a little wetter and maybe have some some warmer temperatures.”
He says it was a move made in the interest of safety.
“We determined it was the safest option for our students,” Murley told WTAQ. “We think that this is something that salvages this season for our students and also allows them to stay safe while they’re playing.”
For multi-sport athletes the WIAA has devised a calendar generally keeping the fall and spring schedules separate.
“There’s very little overlap between winter and fall and fall and spring,” said Murley. “Of course, what it does do, is push the end of the spring sports season out past the end of our school year.”
Sports impacted include football, boys soccer, cross country, girls golf, girls tennis, girls swim and dive, and boys and girls volleyball.
