GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – UPDATE: The Ashwaubenon man convicted of killing two people and attacking a third in their home back in 2016 is not going to prison.
Instead, 30-year-old Jacob Cayer will spend the rest of his life in a state mental hospital.
A jury this week convicted Cayer of the brutal murders of Sabrina Teague and her mother Sunny. Cayer also attacked Sabrina’s boyfriend.
His lawyers told the jury that Cayer is profoundly mentally ill, and was so at the time of the attack.
The jury essentially found Cayer guilty, but not responsible.
Cayer is expected to be committed to a mental health facility.
Jacob Cayer has a mental illness and thus, shouldn’t be held liable for the 2016 murders of his ex-girlfriend, Sabrina Teague, and her mother, Heesun “Sunny,” at a Hobart home. That’s what a psychiatrist testified at a Thursday hearing.
Dr. Kenneth Robbins was hired by prosecutors. After he turned in his findings, neither the defense or prosecutors sought additional psychiatric reviews.
After more than two hours testifying by video from Madison, Robbins summed up his findings:
“It is my opinion that he is, in fact, NGI. At the time of the crime he was so impaired he couldn’t conform his behavior to the requirements of the law, and couldn’t distinguish right from wrong,” Robbins said.
Cayer was found guilty of the killings on Wednesday.
During opening statements earlier Thursday, District Attorney David Lasee told the jury that Robbins’ diagnosis was just one factor for them to consider.
Cayer refused to leave the jail for Thursday’s proceedings. He expressed his disdain for the court and trial with expletive words and hand gestures. Judge Tammy Jo Hock decided not to have deputies force Cayer to appear.
