GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Discussions about the possibility of the city of Green Bay buying the former power plant at the mouth of the Fox River will continue today.
Wisconsin Public Service retired the coal-fired Pulliam power plant in October 2018. Green Bay has expressed an interest in purchasing the site to serve as the new home for the downtown coal piles.
No deal has been struck between the city and WPS, but city staff want to give an update to city leaders, according to Kevin Vonck, the city’s development director.
The agenda item was added to the Redevelopment Authority’s meeting, where it will discuss the matter in closed session.
The City Council is expected to be briefed next week. Vonck says they hope to reach a deal by the end of the year.
The city is targeting a $1.5 million state grant told help fund the project. It would also need an agreement the with C. Reiss Coal Co. to move its facility from the west bank of the Fox River.
The overall project could cost $30 million.
