GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – As the new school year creeps up around the corner, many parents are looking for ways to get their kids caught up on things they might have fallen behind on as the COVID-19 pandemic ended the spring semester early.
After many parents were forced into becoming something of a home-school teacher this spring, they might be hoping to get some help from someone who has a better grasp of the subjects their children are studying.
“A lot of parents are considering hiring a tutor for their children so that they don’t fall behind in their subjects,” says Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau, “They could be hiring an in-home tutor for one-on-one sessions or for small group lessons. Sometimes you might choose an online instruction or even a tutoring center.”
For those who are researching potential tutors to hire, it’s important to take a close look and make some calls. Bach says just because someone is a Straight-A college student doesn’t always make them a good tutor.
“Check references for the tutor or the tutoring service that you’re hiring…Is the tutor dependable, friendly, and knowledgeable? What kind of results did your child have with that tutor?” Bach says, “Discuss details like availability – are they going to be flexible will they be available for extra sessions if there’s a big test coming up? And of course pricing, which is a very important factor as well.”
But another major key to choosing which method of tutoring or which tutor to hire depends on the child. Parents should get tuned in and understand how their child learns.
“It’s very important when you’re hiring a tutor that you consider your child’s comfort level. Maybe they’re not comfortable with a small group session or they don’t do very well when it’s online only,” Bach tells WTAQ News.
