MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) Republican legislative leaders aren’t very keen on Governor Tony Evers’ statewide mask mandate. They are considering several possible challenges.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald have nothing against masks, but object to the Democratic governor telling everyone in the state to wear one. Vos said there’s no need for “a one-size-fits-all mandate,” and that he expects legal challenges. Fitzgerald said he’s gauging the interest in his caucus, to possibly vote down the order, and that the Legislature, which hasn’t met for weeks, should be reconvening for that.
Fitzgerald added, “good luck enforcing this without local support.” Several sheriffs have already said they won’t enforce mask-wearing in their counties. Taylor County Sheriff Larry Woebbeking issued a written statement saying “Law enforcement has long had discretionary authority while enforcing the law… The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department will exercise that authority and will NOT participate in the enforcement of this latest executive order.”
