DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – De Pere’s common council voted 5-3 in favor of an ordinance to require masks in public spaces in the city.
The ordinance applies to anyone who is at least 5 years old.
First-time offenders would face a $10 fine. A second offense would bump the fine to $25, with a third offense costing $50. Violators would also be responsible for any associated court fees.
Alder Dean Raasch proposed an amendment to make education the penalty for a first time violation. A second would then be $10, third would be $25, and $50 for the fourth. That proposal was tabled in a 5-3 vote.
The city council says it wants to get more feedback from De Pere Police before making a final vote on that amendment.
The ordinance does not take effect until it can be read at city council for a second time. De Pere city council will discuss the mandate at its next meeting August 4th.
