GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Southbound Interstate 43 is being cut down to one lane between Danz Avenue and Webster Avenue, likely until November.
The closure will start at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. Concrete barriers will begin to go up over the bridges in that area on Friday morning. DOT Project Manager Brian Haen says to expect delays if you’re driving south on I-43 for the next few months.
“The AM and PM peaks is where we’re going to have the backups. Probably more so with the PM peaks,” Haen tells WTAQ News, “There won’t be any lane closures going north to Door County unless those backups from Irwin Avenue back up into that interchange.”
The suggested alternate route during peak travel times will be Highway 172 and Interstate 41.
A queued warning system will have signs warning drivers about stopped or slowed traffic in the area, and whether taking a different route is advisable. People will be able to see those boards along the road from the north and the south.
“That way, people know if the traffic is slow or is stopped. The boards will tell them what’s happening,” Haen says, “Displaying messages and travel times, encouraging people to take different routes if traffic is backing up.”
But as the warnings about slower traffic and potential backups are issued, so are reminders about keeping your eyes on the road when driving through work zones.
“Be aware of trucks, they’re going to have to get in and out of the work zones – and the workers who are going to be literally five or six feet away,” Haen says, “Slow down if possible and don’t talk on the cellphone, that’s another big thing. Just pay attention to what’s going on.”
There will also be short-term ramp closures, which are expected to last about 35 days each.
- Beginning July 27, southbound I-43 off-ramp to northbound WIS 54/57 will be closed for 35 days. Motorists will follow signed detour.
- Motorists seeking northbound WIS 54/57 will follow I-43 southbound to E. Mason Street, travel west on E. Mason Street to the on-ramp for northbound I-43, take northbound I-43 to the northbound WIS 54/57 on-ramp.
- Beginning July 27, northbound I-43 ramp to southbound WIS 54/57 will be closed for 35 days. Motorists will follow singed detour.
- Motorists seeking southbound WIS 54/57 will take the northbound I-43 ramp to northbound WIS 54/57, travel northbound on WIS 54/57 to Nicolet Drive, to west on Nicolet Drive to southbound WIS 54/57.
