The coronavirus has shut down the majority of county fairs in the United States this year. That leaves a lot of kids lost this Summer because most of their Summer normally consists of training animals for the big show. Luckily, this year exhibitors do have other options so they can still show. It’s not the same as showing at the fair, but it still gives them a chance to compete.
Pork Checkoff’s John Heins brought up how this year a lot of kids are making short videos with their animals and submitting those for online shows. A few of the shows have already gotten over 1,500 entries! This goes to show that these kids want to compete with there animals any way possible.
Heins said that showing pigs is a great way for exhibitors that are interested in agriculture to kick-start their careers. Showing pigs through 4-H taught me a lot about the industry and made me realize that I wanted to make agriculture a permanent part of my life in some way.
If you or someone you know is interested in showing pigs virtually this year, Heins gave some websites to check out.
