(WTAQ-WLUK) — As election day gets closer, prominent political figures are campaigning for candidates in states across the country.
What about here in Wisconsin? 2024 Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris joined David Crowley on the campaign trail Monday.
“All we have to do is look at their record. In this election, Wisconsin has a very clear choice and the choice is David Crowley,” said Harris.
Crowley’s opponent, Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, commented on Harris’ visit on Facebook.
Marquette Law School Poll Director Charles Franklin said at this stage in the election cycle, it’s all about leaving no stones unturned.
“We’re seeing both candidates do everything they can to boost turnout with their bus tours around the state or with these visits by national figures,” said Franklin.
Franklin says bringing in a national figure late in the cycle is a tactic Democrats often use.
“They’re usually appearances aimed at building that base vote and getting turnout up in the strongest areas of the state,” said Franklin.
Franklin added a visit from President Donald Trump to Wisconsin might have an effect on the Tiffany campaign that you wouldn’t expect.
He said, “President Trump is still quite popular with MAGA Republican voters. The trouble is that President Trump is also a strong motivator for Democrats to turn out because they are so negative towards him. There’s an asymmetry here that Harris is probably good for democratic turnout without stimulating a lot of Republican voters, but Trump stimulates both the MAGA base and Democratic opponents.”
Congressman Tiffany says he wouldn’t mind for President Trump to join him on the campaign trail.
“If the President chooses to come here, he’d be welcome. But I mean, that’s a decision that he’s going to make. We don’t worry about the things that we can’t control,” said Tiffany.
Tiffany was joined by Congressman Tony Wied, Senator Ron Johnson and former governor Scott Walker at his event in Bellevue Sunday.
“He’s simply downplayed his connection to the President and the President’s endorsement of him,” said Franklin.
Franklin attributes Tiffany’s distancing to a 38% approval rating for President Trump in the latest Marquette Law School poll.
As of Monday evening, neither President Trump or Vice President Vance have any scheduled appearances in Wisconsin. In the next week, both Trump and Vance are expected to make stops in other Midwest states, including Iowa, Michigan and Ohio.
David Crowley’s events schedule does not specify any additional featured political guests.
