HOBART, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Hobart-Lawrence Police Department says it intends to release some records from the Josh Jacobs investigation, but attorneys for people named in the records say they plan to ask a judge to block disclosure.
On Sept. 24, the court directed the department to review the records and weigh whether they should be released. The department says it completed that review and determined some records could be released with redactions.
It is unclear whether police plan to release the surveillance video. The department said it intends to release police reports, body-worn camera recordings and squad camera recordings. The NFL also said it is pursuing evidence in the case, including the video.
On Oct. 5, the department notified people named in records obtained through subpoenas and search warrants. Attorneys for those people have since told police they intend to seek court orders blocking disclosure, including of broader investigative records.
The police department is temporarily withholding all responsive records while the statutory waiting period and any court proceedings play out. No hearings have been scheduled, according to online court records. The department says the hold is not a denial of the request or a reversal of its decision that some records could be released.
The police department notes Wisconsin law requires it to respond to records requests as soon as practicable but does not set a fixed 10-day deadline.
The Packers running back pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property for the May incident. Jacobs remains on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list, unable to practice or play in games.
