GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s estimated 9.5% of Wisconsinites struggle with a substance use disorder.

One Green Bay man, in recovery himself, is hoping to help people on their journey to get sober and clean.

Later this month Elliott Janz will celebrate eight and half years of sobriety. He’s been to rehab and meetings, worked the steps all while coming up with ideas on how to help others struggling with addiction.

“I downloaded every sobriety app on the market, every single one, the ones you paid for, the ones that were free, all that, and they had one common problem. They were all very stale, very boring, nothing exciting about them, and half of them haven’t even been updated since the iPhone 4,” said Janz.

That’s when he decided a more lively sobriety app for the sober and clean community was need.

Despite having no experience building an app, Janz was able to create “SobrietyMe.” The free app not only tracks a person’s sobriety, it includes daily motivation and encouragement, recommends treatment facilities and recovery organizations.

Janz created it to be more exciting.

“The coin animation, this is my absolute favorite,” he said. “It was always like a really cool accomplishment when you go to a meeting and you get a coin. It always felt really good to have that coin. To have the coin pop up when someone hits 24 hours sober, a month sober, a year, have that coin pop up, do a little animation.”

Janz in no way is a doctor, nurse, counselor or any type of medical professional and he does not claim to be on the app. He simply created “SobrietyMe” as another tool for those in recovery.

“My biggest thing is if it just helps that one person get to rehab or if it just helps that one person get to detox or if it just saves one person’s life. That’s all I need. That’s all I wanted to do,” he added.

In the month or so since he’s launched the app, Janz said it’s been downloaded almost 3,000.

“Sobriety Me” is available for Apple and Android phones and it’s free to download.
