STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A development will provide more affordable housing options to Door County residents.
Officials broke ground Wednesday on the first phase of The Avenue in Sturgeon Bay on 14th Avenue between Georgia Street and Iowa Drive.
When complete, The Avenue will feature 59 units across three three-story buildings. The first phase of the construction project will build 39 affordable housing units for individuals and families earning between 30% and 60% of Door County’s median income, including eight units reserved for residents with special needs.
Developers say rent will be as low as $479 per month.
The first phase is expected to be complete in about one year.
The second phase will be an additional 19-20 units.
Door County has struggled with affordable housing for years due to booming tourism. Organizations like the Door County Housing Partnership, are working to build more affordable options for residents.
