Aug 30 (Field Level Media) – The St. Louis Cardinals placed rookie JJ Wetherholt on the 10-day injured list due to right wrist tendinitis Sunday and recalled fellow infielder Cesar Prieto from Triple-A Memphis.
Wetherholt, 23, went 0-for-4 in St. Louis’ 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday and had just one hit in his last 12 at-bats.
Signed to an eight-year, $112.5 million contract extension in July, Wetherholt is batting .242 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs in 130 games this season with the Cardinals. He was selected by St. Louis with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
The left-handed-hitting Wetherholt starred at West Virginia during his college career. Last season, he was MVP of the Double-A Texas League despite playing in just 62 games for Springfield.
Prieto, 27, is returning to the Cardinals after going 2-for-31 at the plate in his previous stint.
He is hitting .308 with 12 homers and 43 RBIs in 79 games with the Redbirds.
