MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Volunteers are still hard at work on Doty Island, helping to clean up debris left in the wake of the EF-3 Tornado in July.
Jean Moore saw two trees downed in her yard, and some shattered windows on her home. She said the volunteers have been crucial in getting her home back in shape.
“I’ve been very lucky, I’m a senior on basic income right now. I’ve really needed some help, yard work, and throughout the process we’ve had so many volunteers,” Moore explained.
Volunteer Fox Cities put out an urgent request for help with debris pickup through Friday.
The work is to get ahead of the final day for storm debris pickup on the 28th. Crew Manager Eric Kilman said volunteers have been pitching in throughout the week.
“We’ve had a great response; I was surprised so many people came out on a weekday. This last Saturday we had a bunch of people and it was great,” he said.
The group has been steadily sending volunteer groups to help since the tornado hit on July 27th.
But the Work they’re doing is more than just clean up, according to Kilman. It’s a way to lift spirits.
“The people are so happy just to get a little bit of normalcy, some a clean lawn, that’s all it takes sometimes.”
While the work is far from finished, Kilman added the community support has been outstanding.
“They have been coming out volunteering day after day. This is not glamourous work, and we just appreciate their support so much,” he said.
Moore said her power was back and the roads through her neighborhood were cleared within a week. It wouldn’t have been possible without the volunteers.
“It gives you so much hope when you face the devastation. As a person that’s kind of isolated, it’s really nice to have that community to come back to and really be a part of,” Moore said.
