GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A downtown Green Bay redevelopment project is taking a step forward.
Green Bay Common Council approved 8PINE Inc. to construct the park in the Shipyard District Tuesday.
The council also added a $750,000 grant match, closing the funding gap reported earlier this year.
“With an $11 million plan, we are turning our riverfront into an awesome space with a playground, dog park, splash pad, and event lawn for everyone to enjoy along the Fox River,” Green Bay wrote on social media.
A potential groundbreaking date on the second phase was not released.
8PINE is also the company behind improvements at Leicht Memorial Park.
The first phase of construction for the Shipyard District, an area just north of the Mason Street Bridge on the western edge of the Fox River, included a riverfront promenade, floating docks, fishing pier and kayak launch.
Phase three of the Shipyard project includes old shipping containers to house seasonal or limited-time businesses. There is no timeline for when that work could begin.
Last month, Green Bay filed a lawsuit against Merge, an Iowa-based development firm company, for the lack of progress in an apartment complex in the Shipyard.
The civil suit alleges Merge was supposed to construct a “transformative mixed-use waterfront development, secure financing, invest substantial private capital, and create at least $15 million in new taxable value,” but has not done so.
