(WTAQ-WLUK) — Polls are open Tuesday across Wisconsin as voters choose the Democratic and Republican nominees for governor.
The primary comes as incumbent Democratic Gov. Tony Evers prepares to retire, leaving an open race for the state’s top office. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m., and anyone in line by 8 p.m. will still be allowed to vote.
Four active candidates are seeking the Democratic nomination: former Evers aide Joel Brennan, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, State Rep. Francesca Hong and State Sen. Kelda Roys. Mandela Barnes, Missy Hughes and Sara Rodriguez have suspended their campaigns, but their names remain on the ballot because they withdrew after the filing deadline. Hong, with progressive views, led the field with 38% support in the final Marquette University Law School Poll released July 29, while 34% of Democratic primary voters were undecided.
On the Republican side, U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany and medical service technician Andy Manske are competing for the party’s nomination. The Republican Party of Wisconsin endorsed Tiffany at its state convention in May. Tiffany said that move put his campaign into general election mode.
Wisconsin’s primary is a partisan primary, so voters may cast a ballot in only one party’s primary and cannot mix Democratic and Republican contests. Voters should bring an acceptable photo ID to the polls, along with proof of residence if they need to register. Completed absentee ballots must be received by the voter’s municipal clerk by 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted.
