MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A United Airlines flight was diverted to Dane County Regional Airport Friday night due to an unruly passenger causing a security concern.
Air traffic control audio captured crew members of United Flight 2005 describing a passenger who made “multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit.”
Immediately following the attempts, law enforcement on the flight were able to restrain and handcuff the passenger.
Deputies learned the 75-year-old man was confused and suffering a mental health crisis while on board the flight, according to the Dane County Sheriff’s Department.
The flight was headed from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago to Minneapolis.
Upon arrival in Madison, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies met the flight and arrested the passenger.
FBI Milwaukee’s Madison Resident Agency is handling the investigation and is advising no criminal charges be pursued.
The man’s family in Minnesota has been notified and is traveling to Madison to reunite.
United Airlines Flight 2005 left O’Hare around 8 p.m. Friday night and landed in Madison around 9:30 p.m.
It landed in Minneapolis on Saturday, around 2:15 a.m.
The plane was carrying 147 passengers and six crew members. No injuries were reported.
