SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — When the Wolf River communities of Shiocton, New London and Fremont are done assessing flood damage, they could receive state and/or federal funds to help them rebuild.
Rep. Tony Wied, R-8th District has seen the damage and said he’s ready to help Gov. Tony Evers advocate for federal funds.
“If it does involve FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency] and anything regarding the agencies, I will be a very good partner,” Wied said.
Wied said state aid will be determined as communities finish assessing damage. If it exceeds a certain level, Wisconsin will apply for federal aid.
“The governor will make that decision [to apply for federal funds] if it meets a threshold and requires federal assistance,” said Wied. “We’ve let the governor’s office know that we will be there to partner with the state.”
Shiocton is still determining how much damage resulted from the flooding. Village officials are urging residents to document and photograph everything that’s damaged.
“We have come up with an approximate number of maybe 14 homes with major damage,” said Shiocton Police Chief Sara Knapp. “There’s quite a few homes we have not been able to get into due to water still being on the streets and near the homes.”
Wied, whose district includes all three communities, said he doesn’t foresee any challenge receiving federal aid, despite Wisconsin having a Democratic governor.
“There is no politics here,” said Wied. “I work with the governor, I work with the county executives, the local officials, the emergency management folks here on the grounds, and it’s all about collaborating.”
Local and federal leaders have no timeline or cost estimate on the damage or funding. Flood victims can report damage by calling 211 or visiting 211wisconsin.org.
