BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach announced the county is marking Child Abuse Prevention Month.
County leaders encourage residents to show their support for children and families and sharing messages about prevention Friday. Streckenbach declared Friday as Wear Blue Day for the occasion.
“Unfortunately, still today in our community we have children who fall victim to abuse and neglect in our community. And it’s really incumbent of us to try to do everything we can to rid that out of our community, ” said Streckenbach.
In 2025, Brown County took more than 1,000 screened-in and assessed referrals to its Child Protective Services department.
Streckenbach also highlighted the role abuse and trauma from an early age plays for some when they become adults. He said the county learned about the impact abuse has through its various treatment court programs.
Trauma at an early age is what drives oftentimes the substance abuse, the addiction that eventually will land them into court as an adult. And so why today is so important about recognizing child abuse and neglect is if we as a community haven’t figured out how to manage that trauma at a very early age, it unfortunately then potentially becomes a problem as an adult.
