KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Warmer weather is allowing the Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District’s interceptor rehabilitation project to continue.
The majority of the project was successfully completed in 2025, including completing 100% of the 13,180 feet of interceptor lining installation.
Late last fall, once bypass pumping operations were in place for phase five structures, crews discovered deterioration and extensive corrosion more severe than what could previously be observed. The diversion of the sewerage flows allowed crews to full access into the phase five structures as normally wastewater flows continuously through the system, these conditions were not visible until the structures were taken offline.
Protective coatings have now been completed in 60 of the project’s 69 structures. In the remaining nine structures, only the lower bench and base areas need cleaning, abrasive blasting, surface leveling and the final coating application. These nine locations are situated along the railroad corridor and are not within residential areas.
During construction, four structures were also observed to have localized blistering anomalies in the applied coatings. The contractor, along with its coating consultant, is currently evaluating common factors among those structures to determine the cause and identify appropriate next steps. This assessment is ongoing, and any necessary corrective work will be scheduled following the review.
As part of project closeout, crews will also revisit project restoration areas completed late last fall to ensure turf reestablishment once spring decides to stay around and temperatures rise. Any areas requiring reseeding or attention will be addressed in the disturbed green spaces.
