(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) CINCINNATI – The Marquette University women’s lacrosse team (7-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) took a 10-7 win over Xavier (2-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon at Corcoran Field.
“This was a tough, hard-fought game, and I’m extremely proud of our players for pulling out the win. Xavier kept the pressure on, but we responded by generating a lot of key defensive stops and controlling possession. We still need to dial in our shooting, but the resilience and fight we put on the field today is exactly what Marquette lacrosse is all about” head coach Meredith Black said
Tess Osburn led the way with four goals, while Ella Mautz added two goals on six shots for the Golden Eagles and Hanna Bodner finished with a goal, an assist and a team-high six draw controls. Isabelle Casucci chipped in a goal and an assist, and Sarah Beth Burns scored once to go along with four draw controls.
Marquette totaled 31 shots and won the draw control battle 13-6. Jillian Howell and Mikayla Yang split time in goal for the Golden Eagles, combining for four saves.
Marquette built an early advantage with a three-goal run late in the first quarter after Xavier jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Mautz scored twice in the final five minutes of the opening period, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-2 edge after 15 minutes.
Xavier evened the score twice in the second quarter, but Marquette answered both times. Goals from Osburn, Casucci and Bodner pushed the Golden Eagles to a 6-5 halftime lead.
Marquette took control in the third quarter, outscoring Xavier 3-1. Osburn netted a pair of goals in the period, including a man-up score, while Burns converted a free-position attempt to extend the lead to 9-5 heading into the fourth.
Mckenna Farrell opened the final quarter with her third goal of the season to push Marquette’s lead to five. Xavier added a late power-play goal, but the Golden Eagles’ defense held firm down the stretch to secure the road victory.
