GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The leader of Newcap, who was on administrative leave amid allegations the organization has been misusing taxpayer money, is no longer employed by the organization.
A “letter of reference” from Newcap board of directors chairperson Sandra Polarek states Cheryl Detrick’s last day with the organization was March 6 and her salary at the time of departure was $205,234.
Information on if Detrick was fired or resigned was not provided.
The executive committee for Newcap’s board of directors put Detrick on administrative leave shortly after allegations that Newcap was misusing taxpayer money meant to help low-income individuals.
However, Detrick claims Newcap followed strict regulations that came with government grants. She was the CEO for 10 years.
Newcap has been operating at a $2 million deficit and an independent audit of the organization’s finances in 2024 questioned the nonprofit’s ability to continue.
Wisconsin’s Department of Administration put Newcap under “enhanced financial monitoring” late last year.
Newcap has been providing financial help to residents in a 10-county service area for more than 60 years, focusing on things like housing, home weatherization and health care. The organization is shutting down most, if not all, of its operations after June 30.
Federal and state lawmakers have called for investigations of Newcap.
