(WTAQ-WLUK) — Winnebago County will decide whether to allocate $2.5 million toward the design and engineering for an expansion of the highway department building at its board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday night.
The board will decide only whether to allocate $2.5 million for the design and engineering phase – if the board decides to move forward with the project at a later date, it would cost an estimated $32 million.
The project would expand the existing building at County Road Y and bring the facilities department, located at 1221 Knapp St. in Oshkosh, into the same building.
“Having a more effective, more efficient, safer, supportive environment is better,” said Winnebago County Executive Gordon Hintz. “But again, I’ll also remind folks that our trucks don’t fit. We’ve had accidents where the door to the building has been hit because these plows are wider than the door.”
The county identified the highway department building as one that was up to standard but lacked enough space in a recent facilities assessment, according to Hintz.
If approved, the $2.5 million will be paid through remaining federal COVID relief funds. The county would then include the $32 million cost in the 2027 county budget.
The expansion would increase the building from 91,000 square feet to 153,000 square feet. It would add to the space for offices, the garage, truck wash and salt storage, according to county documents. Here’s a full breakdown of estimated costs.
- Highway office addition: $1.955 million
- Highway garage addition: $10.679 million
- Truck wash addition: $1.53 million
- Relocate shed $525,000
- Salt shed addition: $2.376 million
- Facilities office addition: $6.611 million
- Facilities garage and shop addition: $8.429 million
- Total: $32.105 million
The County Board of Supervisors meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, on the fourth floor of the Winnebago County Courthouse located at 415 Jackson St., Oshkosh, Wis.
