APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Community Blood Center’s supply of types O positive and A negative blood is at just 2.5 days on hand.
That is less than what is needed to meet the CBC’s anticipated patient demand in the coming days, officials warn.
All eligible donors are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation as soon as possible. Every blood type is needed. Spring travel and cold and flu season have led to fewer appointments being made and more appointments being canceled, the CBC said.
“In the United States, someone needs blood every two seconds and platelets every 15 seconds,” said John Hagins, president/CEO of the Community Blood Center, in a news release. “Donating may not be top of mind as people enjoy well-deserved spring break trips. Schedule now to help maintain a lifesaving supply of blood products for patients in our communities.”
Every appointment represents an opportunity to support local hospital patients during surgeries, cancer treatments, life-threatening emergencies and more. A single blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives.
CBC donors can earn points throughout the donation process. Points are redeemable for a $25 value gratitude gift, including virtual gift cards. Blood donors can earn a gift as often as every two donations. Platelet donors can earn a gift as often as nearly every donation.
