OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — UW-Oshkosh is getting closer to razing three unused dorm buildings, with work likely starting in May.
Officials have described these buildings as “beyond their useful lives” and “no longer needed.” Demolition work will likely start after the spring semester ends May 16, a campus spokesperson said.
The buildings are all adjacent to each other in a 16-acre site on the block between the Kolf Sports Center and Albee Hall. They are:
- Radford Hall, built in 1952
- Webster Hall, built in 1957
- Donner Hall, built in 1962
Pollock House, which is in that area, will not be demolished.
At a meeting of the city’s Plan Commission last week, UW-Oshkosh planning director Chadwick Shaw said with declining enrollment, the dorm rooms aren’t needed. Eliminating the buildings would reduce maintenance costs, as well, he said.
A new STEM building or residence hall could be built there at some point, but plans are not finalized, Shaw told the panel. After demolition, a 41-space parking lot would be added, along with walkways.
The Plan Commission endorsed the project, sending it to the full City Council. On Tuesday night, the group voted unanimously to approve the razing. The State Building Commission approved the demolitions last August.
