(ST NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) EAU CLAIRE – St. Norbert College won its first game of the young season in a split at UW-Eau Claire, defeating the Blugolds 6-4 in the first game of the afternoon before succumbing to a 22-0 loss in a non-conference doubleheader at Sonnentag Fieldhouse.
The Green Knights (1-3) led 6-0 heading into the seventh inning of the first game but were given a late scare by Eau Claire, who scored four runs in the final inning. The Blugolds took no prisoners in the second game, gaining a 10-0 lead in the first inning and allowing just one St. Norbert hit.
The Green Knights scored their first several runs on Blugold errors and fielder’s choices in the second inning, with Morgan Jarvi, Grendel Sprong (pictured) and Elly Kirst scoring three runs. Kirst scored her second run in the fourth inning to make it 4-0, coming home off a throwing error by the Eau Claire catcher.
Sprong had a solo shot home run in the sixth, as did Morgan Hansel in the seventh to extended St. Norbert’s lead to 6-0. The Blugolds managed to get the bases loaded in the seventh, scoring three of their four runs in the situation before St. Norbert forced the final out.
Addison Maurer earned her first win of the year, pitching 6.1 innings with two strikeouts. Amber Johanek earned the save with 0.2 innings pitched while getting St. Norbert out of the late jam.
Eau Claire dominated in the second game, scoring at least two runs in each inning and allowing just one hit from the Green Knights. Ava Engwall’s single in the second got the Green Knights in the hit column in an otherwise dour ending to the afternoon.
