GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A large pile of mixed scrap metal started on fire Saturday night in Green Bay, producing significant amounts of smoke and flames, according to the Green Bay Metro Fire Department.
In a release from the department, the fire started on the 1300 block of Tomlin St. at 8 p.m. Due to the density and materials involved the fire took about three hours to be fully extinguished.
There were no injuries reported, the cause of the fire is unknown, and estimated loss in dollars is unknown.
The release states: “Scrap metal fires can be challenging due to the compacted materials, some of which can be very reactive to water, and hidden pockets of heat and fire. Our firefighters worked efficiently to contain the fire and prevent further spread to the vegetation and wood stand that surrounds the property.”
