APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Appleton Public Library is a great place to check out a book, but now, you can also check out your heart health.
A free, easy-to-use blood pressure monitoring hub was unveiled at the library Wednesday. Its installation was made possible by the support of a local philanthropic fund through the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region and in partnership with the American Heart Association.
Educational materials will also be available to help residents understand their blood pressure readings and pursue further medical care, if needed. Additionally, the library has blood pressure devices that patrons can check out to use at home.
According to the AHA, high blood pressure affects nearly one in three adults in Northeast Wisconsin. It is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke, and it’s often referred to as the “silent killer” because it typically has no symptoms — making regular monitoring key.
“Libraries are the heart of our communities,” said Mark Charter, development director for the American Heart Association. “What better place to come and check that BP without having to go to the doctor’s office? In a calm, cool, collected space where you have some privacy and you can get those important numbers.”
Officials say these new resources demonstrate how the AHA is working to improve cardiovascular health and advance health equity across Wisconsin by removing barriers to care and placing monitoring tools in trusted, accessible community spaces.
“It’s our first one in the area. We hope to have a lot more people come in, get that blood pressure checked. It is so important when it comes to preventing heart disease and stroke,” Charter said.
