KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A driver hit a Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Department squad car Friday night while a deputy was on duty.
No one was seriously injured, but officials say this incident “is a stark reminder of how dangerous the roadside can be for first responders.”
Per Wisconsin law, if an emergency, maintenance or law enforcement vehicle is on the side of the road, drivers must move over to another lane, if possible, or slow down. The same goes for any disabled vehicle that has its hazard lights flashing, an emergency flare or a driver attending to the vehicle.
“Our deputies, EMS, fire and tow operators work just feet from passing traffic to keep the public safe. A moment of inattention can change lives forever,” the sheriff’s office said. “This could have ended much differently. Please do your part to protect those who serve — and anyone stopped on the roadside.”
