Bailey Laux (Outagamie Co. Jail)
APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Bailey Laux was sentenced to two years in prison with two years extended supervision for a fatal texting-while-driving crash on Interstate 41 in 2022.
Judge Emily Lonergan made the ruling after setting aside a joint sentencing recommendation of no jail time with extended probation.
Laux, 26, pleaded no contest to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle for the May 3, 2022, crash which killed Chelsey Jennings.
According to the criminal complaint, Laux was charged for the death after investigation found he was texting while driving and didn’t hit the brakes before the crash. Data from his car shows he was travelling 78 mph when the crash happened, and the brakes were not pressed. The complaint also included a witness who said she didn’t see Laux brake.
In addition to his sentence, Laux will also have to give 3-4 speaking engagements at high schools about the dangers of texting while driving.
