(USA HOCKEY) MILAN – Led by three-point performances from Joy Dunne (O’Fallon, Mo./Ohio State University) (1g, 2a) and Caroline Harvey (Salem, N.H./University of Wisconsin) (1g, 2a), the U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team defeated Switzerland, 5-0, in the preliminary round of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.
“Today was another great step,” said John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.), head coach of the 2026 U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team. “We were strong in net and broke through offensively. It was great to see so many players contribute and this is a performance to build off as we continue the tournament.”
Taylor Heise (Lake City, Minn./Minnesota Frost) nearly opened the scoring around five minutes into the contest on a breakaway, but her chance was denied by the glove of Swiss netminder Andrea Braendli.
Haley Winn (Rochester, N.Y./Boston Fleet) gave the U.S. the lead at 6:04, tapping in a cross-crease pass from Harvey following a series of passes off an offensive-zone faceoff.
U.S. goaltender Gwyneth Philips (Athens, Ohio/Ottawa Charge) made a stellar glove save with 7:23 remaining, sprawling to deny a net-front opportunity at the start of a Swiss power play.
Harvey rifled a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle 3:05 into the second, but her wrister hit the post. She followed up with another opportunity moments later that was gloved by Braendli.
Dunne doubled Team USA’s lead at 16:08, as she found the back of the net, banking the puck off the skate of a Swiss defender.
Team USA took a 2-0 advantage into the second intermission and outshot Switzerland 37-14 through 40 minutes of play.
Hannah Bilka (Coppell, Texas/Seattle Torrent) gave the U.S. a 3-0 lead 1:17 into the third, directing a shot from Heise past Braendli.
Philips came up large for the U.S., flashing her glove on a shot from the left faceoff circle at 4:06 to keep her team ahead by three. She finished the game with 20 saves in 58:12 of action, while Ava McNaughton (Seven Fields, Pa./Boston Fleet) played the final 1:48 of the contest and completed the shutout.
Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass./Seattle Torrent) added her third goal of the tournament, capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity set up by passes from Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho/Seattle Torrent) and Dunne.
Harvey added a fifth U.S. goal 1:08 later, as she skated down the left wall, faked a shot, deked past Braendli and tucked the puck home to score her first Olympic goal to account for the 5-0 final.
Team USA closes its preliminary round tomorrow (Feb. 10) with a matchup against Canada at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. Puck drop is slated for 8:10 p.m. CET (2:10 p.m. ET) and the game will be broadcast on USA Network and streamed on Peacock.
