MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin transportation officials issued more than 10,000 blackout and retro license plates in the first month they were available.
The state Department of Transportation says there were 9,493 blackout plates and 1,201 retro plates issued.
Of those, 4,634 blackout plates and 631 retro plates were personalized.
The non-personalizes blackout plate series began with the sequence ZAA. ZAA, ZAB and ZAC are already in circulation.
Yellow retro plates began with YAA 1001.
Both plates come with one-time $15 issuance fees and annual $25 fees. Personalization costs another $15 per year.
License plates can be ordered online.
The state budget passed last summer included $5.5 million for the plates’ introduction. They are expected to generate more than $25 million for the state’s transportation fund in the next three years, Gov. Tony Evers’ office has said.
