TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two Rivers is trying to figure out what to do with some prime downtown real estate.
On Wednesday, city officials held the first of a series of public input meetings regarding the future of the old Hamilton Manufacturing Company site. The plant, which first opened in 1880, closed its doors in 2012.
“People have been throwing ideas around for 10 years of what’s going to get built there, what should be built there. We’ve never taken the time with the community to slow down and actually craft a vision — a shared community vision,” said City Manager Kyle Kordell.
Kordell said Two Rivers expects to spend the next few months gathering feedback and hopes to have a solid plan by mid-summer. Opportunities for the community to enjoy what the site becomes will be key in the property’s development, he added.
“There needs to be a public use component. It’s a very important site. Everybody wants to see extensions of the trails and a riverwalk, some kind of park space… Maybe there’s docks,” he said.
It’s too early to know when shovels will hit the dirt, as behind-the-scenes work such as rezoning, soil sampling and the completion of a DNR investigation report must come first.
