GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One of the most flood-prone areas of Green Bay is getting some help from a new project along the East River.
The Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner of Insurance identified East River Van Beaver Park and Emilie Park as two parks that could be redeveloped with new infrastructure and environmental strategies to reduce the flooding risk to the surrounding neighborhoods.
This is part of Wisconsin’s Flood Insurance Awareness Week, which was declared by Gov. Tony Evers as Feb. 1-7 this year.
The neighborhoods around these parks have been struck multiple times over the years by flooding on the East River, most notably in 2019 when numerous rivers around Northeast Wisconsin overflowed following heavy rain that fell on frozen, snow-covered ground and still-frozen waterways.
