ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — This year will see the 250th anniversary of America, and there’s nothing more American than the symbol of our nation: the stars and stripes.
“It is the most recognized symbol of freedom around the world,” Stacey Stewart says about the American flag.
At Stewart’s flag store in Ashwaubenon, Fly Me Flag, she and her team have more American flags and gear on hand than maybe ever before.
“America is celebrating our 250th birthday or anniversary. And you know, I can’t think of a better time to fly flags,” she says.
To help commemorate the big year, Stewart’s business is also carrying the official America 250 flag, and they’re helping thousands across the state and nation gear up.
“Many of the municipalities are preparing for celebrations, and we’re designing custom flags and banners to be flown in their communities. Many businesses are asking us to add some stars and stripes, or red, white, and blue into their company logo. So, we’re making special flags for them to fly this year,” she adds.
And it’s not just businesses and municipalities.
“I’ve had customers actually say, ‘Well, I’m going to take a couple, so I have one to fly and one to really hold onto and possibly pass down,'” Stewart says.
Stewart says each American flag from their store is made in America with domestically-sourced materials.
“We’re deeply passionate about ensuring that that flag is truly made here on U.S. soil,” she says.
If you’ve been flying an old, well-used flag, Stewart — who has owned Fly Me Flag for nine years — says America 250 is the perfect excuse to retire and replace it.
“Flags are powerful symbols, and we are just so proud to be able to sell American flags from the itty bitty handheld ones, all the way up to the massive ones you see when you’re driving down the highway, and really help our community show their patriotism, especially this year,” she says.
Stewart adds that her store works with the VFW, Boy Scouts and American Legion to properly dispose of flags that customers bring in to them. She says they receive thousands each year.
“Bring yours in and pick up a new, fresh flag to celebrate America 250,” she adds.
With so much interest, Stewart shares some advice.
“Since we are seeing such demand for U.S. flags, flag poles and the America 250 products this year, we’re really encouraging everyone to get their orders in early, especially if you want to have a flag pole installed. As soon as the ground thaws, we will be putting in flag pole foundations again,” she says.
