HARTLAND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A crash between a semi truck and snowplow led to the closure of westbound lanes on a portion of State Highway 29 in Shawano County for several hours Monday.
It happened around 9:50 a.m. near S. High Line Road in the town of Hartland, just east of Bonduel, Monday.
Preliminary investigation indicates a Shawano County Highway Department plow truck was driving in the fast lane/median shoulder of the westbound lanes while actively plowing. The semi-truck was also traveling in the fast lane and rear-ended the plow truck. The impact pushed the plow truck into the median, and the semi jackknifed into the ditch area.
A witness reported there were no vehicles operating in the slow lane at the time of the crash. It remains unknown why the semi driver did not move over upon approaching the plow truck.
The driver of the semi-truck was injured and trapped inside the cab. The driver of the plow truck sustained minor injuries and was able to exit the vehicle without assistance.
Fire crews immediately began extrication efforts for the semi driver, and the ThedaStar helicopter was requested due to the severity of the injuries. The extent of the semi driver’s injuries is believed to be serious; however, the exact condition is unknown at this time.
Traffic was rerouted while emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Both vehicles sustained severe damage.
Blowing and drifting snow across the region created hazardous driving conditions Monday morning.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting a commercial vehicle inspection of the semi truck.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office urges all motorists to remain alert, eliminate distractions, and pay attention to emergency and highway service vehicles. Slow down or move over when approaching plow trucks and emergency responders so everyone can return home safely at the end of their shift.
