SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Shawano School District showed off its new district office space Friday.
It came in the form of a ribbon cutting ceremony that celebrated one of the first big projects to be completed as part of a $51.23 million capital referendum passed by voters in the November 2024 general election.
Facility projects are taking place at a trio of Shawano schools: Olga Brener Intermediate School, Hillcrest Primary School and Shawano Community Middle School. The district began work at these buildings last May.
“This is our first ribbon cutting that we have for some of the projects that have been completed so far in the first part of this milestone,” said Superintendent Kurt Krizan.
The district office was relocated to Olga Brener Intermediate School to make room for an expanded weight lifting, fitness athletic training area at Shawano High School, which will be used by student-athletes and during gym classes. A community room was also added.
Krizan said a lot of the referendum work that’s been done so far has been maintenance and infrastructure related.
“We’ve done a lot of boiler work, electrical panel work, fire panel work, roofs at our middle school. Some upgrades to lighting and switching in all of our buildings for some more energy efficiency,” he said.
Other projects include:
- Improvements to classrooms, fine arts/auditorium and other learning spaces
- Increased building and campus security for students, teachers and staff
- Added infrastructure to classrooms to support the latest technology
- Updated student life and common areas
- Added learning space for technical and trade education and family and consumer science
Work is expected to wrap up this fall.
