HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new hospital currently being built in Howard will feature the first traumatic brain injury (TBI) unit in Northeast Wisconsin.
On Monday, Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, a division of Lifepoint Health, announced a joint venture partnership to operate the inpatient rehabilitation facility currently under construction on South Taylor Street, near HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center.
“Together, we are advancing our shared commitment to providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time — an extension of our Franciscan mission to ensure compassionate care for all, especially those who need it most,” said Bob Erickson, HSHS Wisconsin market president and CEO, in a news release.
With 40 private rooms, the new facility will double the capacity of the existing inpatient rehabilitation unit at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital.
Officials say the new hospital will also have the only regional TBI unit in Northeast Wisconsin. It will be staffed by expert rehabilitation professionals who will provide care for adults who have experienced a loss of function or disability due to stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological disorders, orthopedic surgery, amputation and/or other conditions.
The rehabilitation hospital will be specially designed to create a therapeutic environment for patients and will be equipped with leading-edge amenities and adaptive units, including multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums, a specialized “activities of daily living” suite and outdoor courtyards designed to encourage patient movement and activity.
Lifepoint Rehabilitation, which has a network of nearly 50 rehabilitation hospitals nationwide, will manage day-to-day operations of the facility.
The facility is expected to open later this year. It will be supported by Prevea Health physicians who currently care for patients in the inpatient rehabilitation unit at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital, as well as nurses and therapists providing physical, occupational and speech therapies.
