GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A couple dozen protesters spent Sunday afternoon at the corner of Webster and Main on Green Bay’s east side to voice their opposition to the United States’ military action in Venezuela over the weekend. It was a targeted strike attacking the capital city of Caracas, resulting in the abduction the country’s president Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
“I think even if you’re an anti Maduro guy, I think seeing the U. S. government unilaterally kidnapping a foreign head of state is not a precedent we want to be setting,” said Sam Kennedy, outreach chairman for the Green Bay Anti War Committee.
Kennedy says since the buildup of the U.S. Military presence off the coast of Venezuela months ago and the attacks on alleged drug boats, he was expecting this type of military intervention. Like many critics of the Trump Administration, the protesters out Sunday afternoon believe the focus of the military attack is more about getting control of Venezuela’s oil and not a war on drugs.
“The drug narrative doesn’t hold up when you look at the numbers and the oil narrative does,” said Kennedy.
Members of the Green Bay Anti War Committee meets one Saturday a month at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Green Bay. Those against a war on Venezuela were ready to unite and have their voices heard.
“One of the reasons we do it is to tell the people of Green Bay what we stand for,” explained Kennedy. “To show people driving by, who may agree with us but not know, their thoughts are common around here. that they’re represented and that there’s an anti war perspective everywhere in the United States.”
