This area needed a vet tech program because there wasn't one around here unless you wanted to travel.
The news comes just in time for seniors in high school that are still racking their brain on where they should go to school. I finally got the green light to let people know about the program! As of today at noon, FVTC is excited and ready for students to
enroll
in their Veterinary Technician program where students will receive an associate's degree.
The program will begin in the Fall semester of 2019.
I got the opportunity to talk with one of the teachers that were heading the push to get the vet tech program at FVTC, Dr. Lori Nagel. We talked all about how the program ended up at FVTC. This happened because another local college had trouble keeping their accreditation for the program. This gave students in the program the idea to reach out to Fox Valley for some help.
“Maybe we should think about starting the program because there sure was a need in our district” – Dr. Nagel said after the students reached out.
Here's Dr. Nagel talking a little bit about her background and how she ended up teaching at FVTC, along with how the vet tech program got started.
One of the coolest things that I think this program has to offer is that you don't even have to do the whole two year process if you don't want to.
Let me explain, in order to be a certified vet tech you will need to do the two year program because that's the complete program. Dr. Nagel explained that within the program there's a one year option. If that's the route you choose, you will receive a one year technical diploma as a vet assistant.
Personally, I don't see why you wouldn't just do the two year program. But hey, those aren't for everyone! Dr. Nagel talked about how the two year program goes way more in depth on different things like surgical assistance and lab techniques.
One question I had was if once a student finishes up the vet tech program, can they transfer to another school to become a full on veterinarian. “Yes, we have some transfer options that we're working on with some of our other state schools”, Dr. Nagel said. checklist
to see if you have everything you need!
Good luck to all the up-and-coming vet technicians!
