(ST. NORBERT COMMUNICATIONS) SUPERIOR – St. Norbert College held off UW-Superior down the stretch as the Green Knights fought their way to a 64-56 win in a non-conference game at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
The Green Knights (4-2) closed the first half on a 9-2 run to take a one-point lead at halftime and then led for the final 9:46 to get the win.
St. Norbert found itself in arrears 16-9 just over eight minutes into the game. The Yellowjackets eventually led 20-12 with 8:57 left in the first half before the Green Knights methodically got back into the game. Trailing 25-19, Cole Uhlenbrauck (pictured) got the run started with a hoop at the 5:24 mark and followed with a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it 25-24. Charlie Geske’s turnaround jumper gave St. Norbert the lead at 3:24 and Ryan Cox added a driving layup at 2:33 for a 28-25 lead. Superior would get a pair of free throws before neither team scored the last two minutes of the half to settle on a 28-27 edge at the break.
Connor Pytleski’s 3-pointer put St. Norbert ahead 33-29 with 16:38 remaining, leading to the two teams toggling the lead until the game’s last tie came at 42-42 with 10:05 to go. Cox converted another driving layup and then hit a floating jumper with 9:02 left for a 46-42 lead. Ryan Brown’s jumper at 7:06 gave St. Norbert its largest lead to that point at 50-44. After a Superior basket, Uhlenbrauck converted a conventional three-point play with 5:39 left for a 53-46 advantage. Superior would cut its deficit to five points on each of its next two possessions, but the Green Knights answered on an Uhlenbrauck trey and a Cox layup, the latter for a 58-51 lead with 4:10 to go. Superior would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
St. Norbert shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) from the floor. Uhlenbrauck finished with 16 points, while Cox had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. The Green Knights committed just six turnovers.
Superior shot 38.2 percent (21-for-55) from the field. Rocco Paulson and Evan Bennett each had 10 points to lead the Yellowjackets.
MEN’S HOCKEY
ANGOLA, Ind. – For the second-straight day, St. Norbert College rallied from a 3-1 third-period deficit to earn two Northern Collegiate Hockey Association points with a 3-3 overtime tie against Trine University at Thunder Ice Arena.
The Green Knights (9-3-1, 6-1-1 NCHA), ranked No. 5 in the USCHO.com Division III Poll, won the shootout 2-1 to earn the bonus point against the tenth-ranked Thunder (5-3-2, 4-2-2).
Trine opened the shootout with a goal by Brody Simko, but the Green Knights answered in their half of the inning with a Jack Seaverson goal. St. Norbert goaltender Hunter Garvey then turned away Logan Furstenau in the top of the second and Logan Dombrowsky followed with a goal for a 2-1 lead. Garvey then stoned Alexander Babich on Trine’s last attempt to lock up the shootout.
St. Norbert, which won Friday’s series opener 4-3 in overtime, again found itself looking at a 3-1 deficit in the third period before rallying. Braydon Beahm (pictured) maneuvered his way from the goal line to directly out front and buried his ninth goal of the season to make it 3-2 at the 6:50 mark. St. Norbert tied it up when Beahm came up with the puck in the Trine defensive zone and found Logan Dombrowsky streaking down the ice on an odd-man rush to score at 8:39.
The Green Knights had a power play in overtime after a Trine too-many-men penalty but did not score.
Trine took the early lead when Aleksa Babic scored at 10:19 of the first period, but St. Norbert’s Curtis Hammond tied it at 11:33. Simko put the Thunder ahead 2-1 at 15:40. That would hold up until Sam Antenucci scored at 5:45 of the third period to give Trine a 3-1 lead.
Beahm and Dombrowsky each had one goal and one assist for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Trine 38-26, including 16-5 in the third period. Garvey made 23 saves for the Green Knights, while Kyle Kozma made 35 stops for Trine.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
DE PERE – It was third straight game with a shutout for St. Norbert College, defeating Trine University 2-0 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey League game at Resch Olympic Pavilion.
The Green Knights (10-2, 7-1 NCHA) outshot the Thunder 52-13 in a game thoroughly controlled by St. Norbert from the first puck drop to the final whistle.
After a scoreless first period, the Green Knights broke through on a power play when Claire Healy scored at 6:59 from Annalee Holzer (pictured). Holzer added one goal herself at 19:42.3 from a Briar Charchenko helper.
Tanith Plachetka kept her second consecutive shutout and third overall this season with 13 saves. Annie Kindseth made 50 stops for the Thunder.
St. Norbert was 1-for-1 on the power play. Trine had no power play opportunities.
