MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — In the aftermath of the cancellation of a major Navy contract, nearly 100 workers are being laid off from Fincantieri Marinette Marine.
Last week, the U.S. Navy announced it is ending the Constellation frigate program, thus canceling the remaining four ships that were supposed to be built in Marinette.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson said, in part:
We are letting some folks go as we balance the size and composition of the workforce relative to the work we have. We aren’t having massive layoffs.
In total, 93 workers were laid off. The spokesperson said “most of the people” were contract laborers, but confirmed that number also included “some” white collar employees.
“This is a result of balancing the work we have and the workforce needed to accomplish our mission and deliver warships to the U.S. Navy,” the statement said.
