The nephew of outgoing Democratic State Senator Dave Hansen is going to try to keep the 30th State Senate District in the family.
De Pere City Councilman Jonathon Hansen announced his candidacy this week.
“My uncle comes from a working class background, and I think whoever replaces him needs to have that similar type of perspective,” Hansen told WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl’. “That’s something I think I can bring to Madison.”
Hansen says his priorities align with his uncle’s, saying he aims to prioritize clean water initiatives and improving the job market.
“We have to have a laser focus on creating good paying jobs right here in Northeast Wisconsin, and that has to be driven by local businesses,” said Hansen. “The state legislature gave $4 billion to Foxconn. Imagine if we took that $4 billion and invested it in local businesses.”
The race is expected to be a tight one, as the elder Hansen won as a popular democrat in a district that voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
Senator Hansen was first elected in 2000.
“No one can fully replace my uncle,” said Hansen. “He was definitely one of a kind. My goal is to do the best I can to carry on his legacy.”
