(WTAQ-WLUK) — AAA is activating its “Tow to Go” program this week to help keep Wisconsinites safe while traveling for Thanksgiving.
The initiative provides a free, confidential ride and tow to impaired drivers and their vehicles. It’s designed to be a last-resort or safety net when other options, like a designated driver or rideshare, fall through.
Tow to Go will be active across Wisconsin from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Dec. 1. The service is open to both AAA members and non-members. Rides are available to any location within a 10-mile radius. Just call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO.
“Since holiday celebrations can lead to risky choices, AAA offers Tow to Go to prevent those choices from turning into tragedies,” said Nick Jarmusz, director of public affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group, in a news release. “If you find yourself without a safe ride, call AAA and we’ll help get you and your vehicle to a safe place.”
According to AAA, nearly 82 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the Thanksgiving holiday period. About 90% of travelers will choose to drive, AAA says.
Other alarming statistics provided by AAA demonstrate the criticality of planning ahead and making responsible choices if your Thanksgiving celebration will include alcohol.
- Alcohol-impaired driving is involved in nearly one-third of all U.S. traffic deaths.
- In 2023 alone, over 12,000 lives were lost in alcohol-related crashes — one every 42 minutes.
- Thanksgiving weekend is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road due to increased traffic and celebrations.
“AAA encourages everyone to celebrate responsibly by planning ahead,” Jarmusz said. “Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service or stay overnight if needed. Together we can make this Thanksgiving a safe and joyful one for all.”
