GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Voice cloning technology is being utilized for a variety of helpful reasons – but it can also fall into the wrong hands.
“Voice cloning software has been around for years,” says Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau, “There is technology out there that can clone somebody’s voice and leave a voicemail tricking you into doing something like sending money.”
Scammers may obtain the ability to clone the voice of someone you know – and use that technology against you. The BBB is seeing a number of cases where bosses seem to be requesting personal information or money from employees.
“It’s always good advice to double check with your boss or confirm those instructions before you go ahead and send personal information or money,” Bach tells WTAQ News, “Train your staff and create a culture where they have no problem second-guessing a request like that from their boss. They should be aware of scams like this.”
Scammers will also hack into email accounts to obtain the information to contact a person – and may even send emails that seem like they’re from a legitimate place.
“Most hackers steal login credentials and things like that by breaking into email accounts,” Bach says.
It’s always recommended to set up multifactor authentication for email logins and other changes in settings. The BBB suggests verifying all changes in information about employees, customers, and vendors.
