GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Area fire crews had a busy Monday, battling a two-alarm fire at Proctor and Gamble’s Green Bay Plant.
Green Bay Battalion Chief Drew Spielman says the fire started inside of a paper machine near the south side of the plant. It caused heavy smoke, but it was actually getting to the flames that was the problem.
“It was not a large fire by any means, it just was very hard to get to,” Spielman told WTAQ. “It’s hard to access all the venting and the ductwork associated with paper machines.”
Firefighters worked with plant employees to get the machine open. There were no injuries nor any threat to the plant…in fact, the rest of the facility continued to operate.
“The rest of their paper machines were still turning out paper as normal,” Spielman said. “In fact, that machine will probably, after some repairs, be up and running again in 24 hours.”
The machines are designed to withstand fire and water damage.
Green Bay firefighters were assisted by a number of other agencies in the area including Bellevue, DePere, New Franken, Denmark, Howard, Lawrence, and Ashwaubenon.
