OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A woman who operated an unlicensed in-home daycare faces seven child neglect charges for injuries allegedly suffered by children in the home.
Nicole Brewer, 36, returns to court March 12 for a balance of initial appearance. A $20,000 cash bond was set during her first court appearance Tuesday, court records show.
Specifically, she faces four counts of neglecting a child — consequence is bodily harm; one count of neglecting a child — consequence is great bodily harm; and two counts of neglecting a child — consequence is emotional damage. The charges involved six different children in her care at a town of Chase home, all under the age of 5.
According to the criminal complaint, the most serious injuries were suffered by a 2-month-old boy, who was taken to the hospital with a broken arm.
Brewer admitted she has watched more children than the law allows, and more than she can safely supervise. She also told parents she was licensed but was not, the complaint states.
Brewer told an officer the state has been to her house “two times maybe three” because of the complaints on how many children were there. The complaint cites multiple parents offering instances with more than four kids in the home.
According to the Wisconsin Dept. of Children and Families website: “Anyone providing care and supervision for four (4) or more children, under age 7 years, for less than 24 hours a day must be licensed by the Department of Children and Families.”
