GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge will be closing down at the begging on the work day on Monday.
Public Works Director Steve Grenier says they need to replace the locks that keep the bridge in place and the shims that keep it from vibrating while the bridge is closed.
“Think of it like an oil change in your car,” Grenier told WTAQ. “There are parts that need maintenance. This is one of them. It’s been 22 years since the bridge opened, it’s time to replace the locks and the shims.”
The work is expected to take about three weeks, according to the contractor working on the bridge.
“Those [locks and shims] are kind of not really easy to get to, so there’s a time component to it,” said Grenier.
Grenier says that they’re working on the bridge now to avoid conflicting with shipping traffic.
The bridge carrying Main Street over the Fox River is expected to reopen March 27th. A suggested detour will be over the Walnut Street Bridge.
