GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Traffic citations were up again in Green Bay in February…and it’s not because people are speeding more.
Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych attributes it to an increase in patrols and vigilance among officers.
“We doubled our traffic enforcement unit, and we’re making all officers know that this is a priority when out on the streets,” Warych told WTAQ. “To make sure we’re doing traffic as much as we’re doing any other stuff.
It’s all part of the “Slow Down, Green Bay” initiative, a year-long effort to combat a common nuisance.
With the number one complaint coming into the police department being traffic related, we are stressing it on our patrol shifts,” Warych said.
An increased enforcement effort scheduled for next Tuesday in and around a number of area school zones is part of that initiative. A similar effort in January resulted in 60 citations.
“Our goal will always be compliance and for people to drive safe,” said Warych. “Our perfect outcome in all of this is to have zero citations.”
The enforcement effort will be in effect at the start and the end of the school day. Officers will step up patrols around Southwest High School, Franklin Middle School, Lincoln Elementary School, and MacArthur Elementary School on the west side, and Washington Middle School, Nicolet Elementary School, and Danz Elementary School on the east side.
