GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Fourth graders from Green Bay spent their Thursday afternoon providing dozens of scarves to people in need.
Jackson Elementary School students took a field trip across the street to Colburn Park, each student equipped with a knit scarf donated by a community member.
“We all love doing this and it’s so much fun,” fourth grader Mackenzie Otten said.
Students had the chance to tie a scarf around a tree for a good cause.
“We’re here today to help our neighborhood community and distribute some winter clothing,” Jackson Elementary fourth grade teacher Krista Clendenen said.
The homemade scarves are meant to be a gesture for people in need. As the weather is getting colder, people can come to the park, take a scarf off a tree and use it for warmth.
The scarves come with a note that reads, “Cold? Please take this scarf with love from a Jackson Elementary friend.” It’s a small gesture that can go a long way for someone in need.
“It makes my heart be warm inside. These scarves are going to help a lot of people,” Otten said.
“It makes me happy that I’m helping these people,” Jackson Elementary fourth grader Xzavier Reyes said.
The knitting of the 61 scarves also comes from the heart. Each of them was homemade with love by Linda Saugstad, who decided to make good use out of a hobby.
“Gives me something to do, keeps me occupied. My little bit of contributing to the community,” Saugstad said.
Thursday’s activity also served as part of the fourth graders’ social studies assignment, teaching that many people deal with different problems. Saugstad said she’s glad the kids are taking away a valuable life lesson.
“They can learn that not everybody’s as fortunate as they are, you know, to have clothes and school and things. So it’s a win-win for everybody,” Saugstad said.
As the kids tie their final scarves around trees, they hope their work pays off and brightens someone else’s day.
“It brings me to tears when people are happy,” Otten said.
This was the second year Jackson Elementary students tied scarves to trees. Saugstad plans to do this again and make more scarves for people next year.
